Psychological Integrity

The first obstacle is that lack of psychological integrity I mentioned earlier. If you can’t pull your psychology together from one day to the next, it’s harder to pull your morals together. You could follow a rigid religious or moral code, but how often have you seen someone raised in a strict home fall into a life of foolishness as an adult, because he or she has never made a personal choice to really sign on? To have any bearing upon your life, a moral code must be integrated into it, not painted on the surface. Good parenting will help guide you, but you still have to do the work in late adolescence and young adulthood to make it your own. And bad parenting doesn’t excuse bad conduct. Either way, you must first believe in the importance of a code to guide your life, and then develop one that makes your life work better.
